NY Has University Students’ Health Care Investigated

Rest assured that you are not the only one worried about your student’s health care. NY Attorney General, Cuomo, is investigating the contracts between universities and insurance companies.

In particular, Cuomo wants to put a stop to universities that are requiring students to purchase a specific plan as a condition for enrollment, and those who are receiving financial incentives to require students to purchase coverage from one insurance company.

Even though a lot of students have health coverage from their parents, a lot of times the university health center does not take that coverage, states the NEw York Times.

Alternatively, they accept only the universities preferred coverage. President of College Parents of America, James A. Boyle states, “[Offending] campus health centers do not accept [their parents' coverage] as payment for service. Instead, some schools force the student, as a condition of enrollment, to purchase health insurance policies offered by the school.”

Cuomo has asked, formally, requested that some New York universities keep record of their dealings with insurance companies. .”With students and their families being financially squeezed at every turn, colleges must ensure that they are looking out for students’ best interest first and foremost as opposed to their own financial bottom line,” stated one of Cuomo’s special assistants.
