Curing Dyslexia
The key to curing dyslexia is usually very simple. You just need to understand why the person is struggling to read.
Dyslexia just means “difficulty with reading despite normal intelligence”. It gives no information on why someone is finding reading hard.
So, to diagnose someone as dyslexic is a bit like a mechanic coming to look at your car on the side of the road and saying (with great solemnity) “you have what we call a breakdown”. Imagine how frustrating that would be. What you want to know is what is wrong and how to get it fixed.
In reality there are just a few causes that account for 95% of cases of dyslexia and most are easy to fix (or at least that is what we have found!).
Furthermore, 80% of dyslexia is caused by an “auditory deficit”. This means that the person reading is not using their auditory brain cortex in order to read. They are using a purely visual approach, effectively viewing a word as a picture to be recognised.
15% have mild dyspraxia. That makes scanning the text very difficult because they don’t have sufficient control of their eyeballs. Simple exercises can help that in just days.
So, to head towards a cure, demand to know the cause of dyslexia. The solution is then usually quite simple.
